The Evolution of Barbie

I was pretty happy to stumble upon this video. It shows little girls playing with Barbie dolls that look like normal people. I guess Matel is making Barbie's in different shapes now, so kids can choose whether they want a more normal looking doll, or the stereotypical shaped Barbie doll. I like the idea of letting kids choose, but I don't think it's a good idea to get rid of the unproportional Barbie we all know and love.

There is a fine line between wanting a doll that looks different, unlike yourself and idealizing that doll while bringing yourself down at the same time. I could want a Malibu Barbie because I'm a kid from the midwest, who has never been to a beach. It's fun to pretend. But when I start comparing myself to the doll, and feeling sad about it, that's when it becomes unhealthy. I'm hoping Barbie fans are either a) too young to compare themselves to their doll or b) old enough to realize that it's just a doll.

That being said, as an overweight child who played with Barbies, I cannot say that they've attributed to my self esteem problems. Those came later in life. No toys that I interacted with caused me to doubt myself. And it wasn't until 7th grade that I even noticed I was different and overweight. I was lucky enough to not be bullied. I had friends all throughout elementary school, and it wasn't until I hit  puberty that I noticed any imperfections. Barbie did nothing.

So while, yes, having different shaped Barbies is great, I think it satisfies the needs of parents and adults more so than the children.

#randomquestion: funny videos

What was the last funny video you saw?

An oldie, but a goodie. Jenna and Julien playing with helium booth. It's like photobooth on a mac, but also changes you voice. If you're looking for more Jenna and Julien funny videos, you can click here, here, or here. I love them together, and I think they're pretty funny when they do videos together. They compliment each other completely. ALSO, it took me a loooong time to warm up to Julien, just because of the name, but I'm over it, and now he's one of the only vloggers I watch.

My bad

I have worked late this past Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday. I'm not going to backdate a weeks worth of blog entries, as I haven't blogged since last Sunday, so I'm just going to pretend like it never happened! Life got crazy, sorry.

The biggest highlight of last week was that I finally got my female interpretation of Donatello's David tattoo. I'm not making any big post to my social media yet, not until it's healed. But just know that it's awesome, I'm in love with it, and it's incredibly sexy. Expect something within the next few weeks.

In the meantime watch this and get behind the #thisbody movement.

#feelgood: This is important

Ashley has since cut her hair off, and she's cute as fuck. Watch this, and never, ever, let anyone force you into feeling, acting, or dressing like something you aren't.

Picking heavy stuff up, then setting it down.

I did this thing once with Alise (an old friend from high school, but now, my boyfriends-step brothers-fiance, pfft practically family).

we can't stop

I'm going to get a lot of flack for this (probably), but that's ok. Today I watched Miley Cyrus's new music video for her song, "We Can't Stop." And by watched it, I mean 3 or 4 times. And you know what? I really liked it. It was weird, it was strange, it was artsy, it was just... crazy. It didn't make any sense, which is why I have a slight infatuation with it.

Some of my favorite parts:

  • The strange TV head.
  • Miley tonguing the Barbie doll.
  • The lady "cutting" off her fingers causing pink goo to erupt from her hand.
  • Miley getting her head stepped on around the 3 minute mark.
  • Weird dancing bears.
  • The guy really enjoying himself while eating bread.
  • Let's not forget the money sandwich.
I also just love how Miley rocks her style. The grillz, her weird suspender suit, and homeless guy hat. She don't give a fuuuuck, and I love it.

So anyway, watch it. It's really special, let me know what you think!

Awesome Inspiration

To counter my Debbie Downer entry I just posted, watch this video. It's so awesome. I look up to this guy way too much.

Wife Swap

So, I'm watching Wife Swap this morning, and I get to an episode where a super healthy mom swapped lives with a super Italian, heavier mom. And let me tell you, the super healthy mom is really making me angry because all she does, the entire episode is fat shaming. I feel like she feels entitled to making those comments because she lost 80 pounds, because she grew up fat. Bull, you're not higher up, you're not above everyone because you used to be fat, now you're thin. It was like she lost 80 pounds, but gained 80-thousand pounds of cockiness. I mean, she stands while eating dinner (while her family sits) because it burns more calories. She just... bugs me. Thoughts?

Maybe I just like being healthy, but I also like eating (especially big Italian dinners). My family, my heart, is a big Italian meal. And I love that! But I also love being healthy and not feeling like I'm going to die after a meal. So seeing both extremes clash really annoyed me, when I can live with both extremes in my life perfectly.

DDPYOGA

Sorry for my lack of Feel-Good's and Freak-Out's. Julien has been using my mac a lot lately, so my prime blogging hours have been compromised.

Yesterday I did another 5K for the Jewish Rehabilitation Hospital in Laval, QC. My sister in law was running it (as a manager, not literally), so I got a discount to participate. Seeing as I was less ready for this one, my time was a bit worse, but only by a few minutes. I clocked in at 36-something minutes. But, I did enjoy this run more. Instead of running around a racetrack with nothing to look at, we went around neighbourhoods, surrounded by houses and cars. Definitely a lot more interesting. There were also a lot less people (700 to last weeks 7000), which I enjoyed.

In regards to my exercise habits, I'm going to start relying less on the gym. For many reasons, I no longer wish to go there, but the main one would be the $43 a month I have to pay to be a member. Now that it's nice outside, I'd like to start running first thing in the morning. This is the plan:

  • Cardio (running) every other day.
  • 30 Day Shred every weekday (weekends off)
  • Walking Chubbs nightly, if possible.
When the 30 Day Shred is over, and if I liked it, I'd like to try other Jillian Michael's workouts. Start a tiny collection of work out DVDs.

I'd also like to try DDPYoga. DDP, you know, like Diamond Dallas Page, the professional wrestler. I've always had a soft spot for him, not quite sure why... Anyway, I first found out about it through the video below. I highly recommend you watch it.

24 April 2012

Check it out! My 100th post is my birthday post! It's also a weigh-in day. But guess what?

152 lbs!

I didn't go to the gym yesterday because I was ridiculously sore from Sunday (for some reason), and I'm not going to go today because it's my birthday. And because I said so. But mostly because it's my birthday.

Yesterday, I also needed comfort food, so I splurged at dinner. BBQ chicken pizza for one please.

ALSO ALSO ALSO it's National New Kids on the Block day! CELEBRATIONS.

Elevensies

You know the day won't treat you right when you have to quote Peregrin Took.

But what about second breakfast?

Needless to say, Julien and I ended up at one of his friends house for a potluck-thing. I had no idea how to track everything I ate, so I left it alone. I know for a fact, though, that I'm over calories and did hardly any exercising.

Pretty large paper due Wednesday, haven't really started. The next two days will be hell, but what's graduate school without a little misery?

Inspiration: Rawn

This is Rawn. He has a couple of YouTube channels, and he's an inspiration to me.

Lately he's gone through the changes I'd love to go through. He's lost weight, he's become comfortable with himself, and he very recently ran the LA Marathon. What he speaks about in the video above is my exact mind-frame. I've been such a fan of his for such a long time, and I somehow feel connected to him because we're going through the same journey.

What I'm running on April 29th isn't the LA Marathon, it's only a 5K, but baby steps. Baby steps.

I'm going to try to run the whole thing through, and dedicate it to Rawn.

guhh

I've never seen someone who does a complete 180 with their confidence like this. Not everyone has to look like Josh Groban, sometimes it actually is their voice that moves people to tears.

friends are wonderful

I started the day off well, I even brought my birthday cake oreos to school with me so I can get rid of them. My friend Veronica sent me a tweet during class, saying they taste like rainbow sprinkle dunkaroos, but in cookie form. I chuckled. The chuckling ended, though, when my professor cut our presentation off in a rude manner, and my group didn't get to do our AWESOME activity with the class. Mind you, she never cut anyone else off, our presentation was actually interesting, and she then proceeded to give the class a 20 minute break. Some of those 20 minutes could have been ours to finish our presentation... I was pretty mad. So mad that when I saw some student organization selling cupcakes in the lobby, I exclaimed, "I want a cupcake!" and my friend, Roman, gave me a loonie so I could get one. I have nice friends. I think they're learning that food makes me a happy lady.

(It was a funfetti cupcake with lemon cream cheese frosting, btw)

Julien and I also ordered in tonight. I got a gyro, so I didn't go over my calories. I have a weakness for gyros. I don't know why.

No gym today. No gym tomorrow, as I'll be running around with friends (I'm so happy I can say I have friends now!), going to job fairs, having group meetings, scoping out women at bars, etc etc. (I'm such a brosky. Jordan would be proud... TO BITCHES!) I probably won't have any sort of regular gym schedule until school winds down. As it is, I'm supposed to be revising my resume (or curriculum vitae, if I want to be fancy) and reading an article for an assignment due Monday.

(long post is long)
My friend Shanna posted this video on my Facebook wall. I think it's wonderful.

(And this is totally unrelated to being healthy and dieting, but she also posted a CANDY BLOG on my wall. C-A-N-D-Y B-L-O-G. Click here!)
